Native Africans vs Blacks in Americans:
Is There a Real Conflict Between These Two Cultures?

Dr. Sylvester Caraway
I was born on July 11, 1956, in Los Angeles but raised in Compton, California, part of which became Carson in the mid-70s. I attended Ralph Bunche Elementary, Enterprise Junior High, and briefly Compton High before transferring to Gardena High due to a violent incident. After graduating in 1974, I joined the U.S. Air Force with six classmates.
I served 20 years in the Air Force (1974–1994), starting as an administrative clerk before becoming a combat cameraman on flying status. I documented military operations, training, and conflicts worldwide, traveling extensively to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Early in life, I was also part of a family band, The Caraway Four, which competed with groups like The Jackson Five and recorded one album.
After retiring, I pursued higher education—starting at Sacramento City College, then earning a master’s degree with honors and a PhD in Philosophy from Griffith University in Australia over nine years. I never personally experienced much racial segregation in the Air Force—perhaps due to my California upbringing.
